CHALK HILL AVA

Chalk Hill occupies a curious northeastern corner of the Russian River Valley AVA, in the hills above the town of Windsor about eight miles north of Santa Rosa. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms established it on October 21, 1983, the same season that brought AVA status to Russian River Valley, Knights Valley, and Green Valley. The petition was led by a group of seven local vintners and growers, including Donna Maria Vineyards, DeLoach, F. Korbel Bros., and Landmark, who recognized that the area's distinctive soils warranted separate identification.

The name is a bit of a misdirection. Despite the chalky white appearance of its soils, Chalk Hill contains no actual chalk; the pale color comes from quartzite-rich volcanic tuff deposited over centuries by eruptions from Mount St. Helena to the east. These soils are mildly fertile, well-drained, and naturally restrain vine vigor, encouraging small berries with concentrated flavors. The AVA encompasses roughly 21,120 acres along the western slopes of the Mayacamas foothills, with elevations rising from about 200 to 1,330 feet. The vast majority of the 1,600 or so planted acres sit between 200 and 800 feet.

Climate sets Chalk Hill apart from the broader Russian River Valley below. Because the AVA sits at higher elevation than the river valley floor, it escapes much of the cooling fog that defines neighboring areas, and growing-season temperatures are typically a few degrees warmer. Mornings still bring some marine influence, but afternoons warm reliably enough to ripen Bordeaux varieties alongside the cool-climate whites that the broader Russian River is known for. The combination of warmer climate and distinctive volcanic soils produces Chardonnay of rich, baked-apple character with crisp citrus and mineral lift, Sauvignon Blanc with tropical fruit and floral aromatics, and structured Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc from the upper slopes.

Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards & Winery, founded in 1972 by Fred Furth after he spotted the natural amphitheater of his future estate from a small plane, defines the appellation's identity. The 1,300-acre property, acquired by Foley Family Wines in 2010, is home to one of California's largest Chardonnay clonal trials, conducted in partnership with UC Davis, and the proprietary Chalk Hill Chardonnay 97 clone was developed here. Rodney Strong Vineyards, whose founder Rod Strong was instrumental in the original AVA petition, was the first to release a Chardonnay with "Chalk Hill" on the label. Other producers include Calluna Vineyards, working in a Bordeaux mode; Trinité Estate from the Lurton family of Bordeaux; Notre Vue Estate, Windsor Oaks Vineyards, and Albini Family Vineyards.

For buyers, Chalk Hill offers some of Sonoma's most beautiful rolling vineyard country, with large estate parcels, equestrian properties, and a tasting-room scene that emphasizes hospitality and culinary experience over volume tourism.
