OAKVILLE AVA

The Oakville AVA sits at the geographic center of Napa Valley, an unassuming stretch of valley floor and lower hillsides that nonetheless produces some of the most coveted Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. Designated in 1993 on the same day as Rutherford, the appellation spans roughly 5,000 to 6,200 vineyard acres between the Mayacamas Mountains to the west and the Vaca Range to the east. Elevations run from the valley floor to about 1,000 feet on the eastern benches.

Oakville's soils are remarkably diverse, which is much of the point. Gravelly and sandy loam alluvium dominates the valley floor, deposited over millennia from both mountain ranges, while volcanic material from the Vaca side and ancient marine sediment from the Mayacamas side add complexity to specific blocks. The presence of clasts from the Sonoma Volcanics distinguishes Oakville's alluvial fans from Rutherford's just to the north. Climate is warm but moderated by morning fog and afternoon breezes that come up through the Yountville Hills from San Pablo Bay, producing a long, even ripening period.

History defines the appellation. H.W. Crabb purchased 240 acres in 1868 and developed To Kalon — Greek for "the beautiful" — which by 1880 had grown to 430 acres and is today one of the most celebrated vineyard sites in the New World. Robert Mondavi chose Oakville in 1966 as the home of his eponymous winery, the first major Napa winery built after Prohibition; the property sits adjacent to To Kalon, and Mondavi's Fumé Blanc helped reinvent California Sauvignon Blanc. Opus One, the 1979 joint venture between Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild, opened a chapter of Bordeaux–Napa collaboration that continues to define the AVA. Far Niente, Silver Oak, Groth, Harlan Estate, Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, and the cluster of producers sourcing from To Kalon all carry Oakville's reputation.

Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, often bottled varietally but also blended in Bordeaux style with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Oakville Cabernet tends toward muscular fruit concentration, dark cassis and blackberry, layers of cedar and spice, and a tannic structure that supports decades of cellar aging. Sauvignon Blanc from To Kalon and surrounding parcels has earned its own following for richness and depth that outstrips most New World examples.

For wine buyers, an Oakville designation on the label signals both ambition and a particular taste of central-valley fruit weight balanced by good acidity. For visitors, the appellation is compact enough to traverse in a day, and the contrast between the polished hospitality of Robert Mondavi's mission-style winery and the intimacy of smaller producers tells the story of Napa Valley in microcosm. For property buyers, Oakville is the address that needs no explanation; vineyard land here is among the most expensive in the United States, and the wines that result reliably command the prices to justify it.
